CP. Besides it’s already too expensive to take the Acela train to DC, what makes them think this will be less expensive to operate?
Hell we can’t even get a highway interchange approved. You know how many NIMBY peeps are gonna ruin this? You aren’t running that underneath MY property!!!

I wish Acela were cheaper because overall the experience of riding a train is so much more pleasant than flying. Roomy seats, no TSA, no stupid baggage fees, no nonsensical priority boarding groups that serve only to create aggravation that can be be relieved by signing up for a credit card.

Yea, I’d take a train tunnel from NJ to Manhattan that isn’t over 100 years old to start with. Just one. Like, there probably should be 15 or something by now, but I’d settle for just one new one.
Also, Fuck Chris Christie for many reasons but especially for cancelling the ARC tunnel.

Yeah, it sounds great but I’ve never done it. The only people I know who use Acela for Boston to NY or DC are business travelers.
It can even be a little quicker than flying Boston to NY just because you are avoiding the hassles of flying - quicker to board, and you arrive downtown in NYC, so the business guys like it. But for us ‘regular folk’ it’s too expensive.

I’ve taken regular Amtrak between DC and Philadelphia a few times. Even that is a much better experience than flying. For the shorter distance it’s not even that much longer of a trip than Acela, because while Acela’s top speed is obviously much higher, it has to slow down for turns (because it runs on the same regular Amtrak tracks which don’t have gradual-radius turns like true high speed rail systems) and stops.
I wish high speed rail was more prevalent and better priced in the US but it’s not happening anytime soon. Hell, here in Wisconsin, one of the first things Scott Walker did when he was elected governor was turn down $800 million in federal high speed rail funding for the Wisconsin section of a Chicago-Milwaukee-Madison-Minneapolis high speed rail line because the state would be responsible for a small portion of the ongoing operational costs. He even campaigned on that. Then he went and spent a bunch of the state’s money on (much needed) road construction. Some folks noted that he received many large campaign contributions from paving companies which they accused him off favoring over the train.
